What do Boy Scouts do?

• Scouting promises you the great outdoors. As a Scout, you can learn how to camp and hike without leaving a trace and how to take care of the land. You’ll study wildlife up close and learn about nature all around you. There are plenty of skills for you to master, and you can teach others what you have learned.

• Boy Scouts do lots of fun things. Troop 496 tries to campout once per month. During the campouts we participate in other activities like fire building, cooking, hiking, watching Civil War reenactments, white water rafting, canoeing and tours to name a few.

• We also do several community service projects like helping out at Poolesville Day, the 4th of July Fireworks, Scouting for Food and other important activities. You may even earn Student Service Learning (SSL) hours for some of these service projects.

Court of Honor on Monday, June 13th at 7:30pm
Please join us on Monday as we recognize all that has been accomplished.

Troop 496 planning meeting
Our annual planning meeting will take place at the Poolesville Presbyterian Church, June 18th from 9:00am to when we get done.

Some things to think about before the meeting:
1. You are a scout until you are 18.  What do you want to accomplish or what are your goals during your time as a scout?  Is there a particular rank that you want to achieve?  Are there positions within the troop that you would like to hold?
2. What special activities, events, or trips do you want to participate in?  Examples of these include:  Scouting for food drive, Wreath laying ceremony at Arlington, National Jamboree, World Jamboree, and Philmont High adventure trip.
3. Is there particular training that you would like to take?  Examples of the types of training available in the BSA include:  Leadership training, First Aid, and Lifeguarding to name just a few.

Please plan to join us at the planning meeting.  It is important that you think about the stuff above so we can develop our goals for next year and be smart as we plan out our activities.  Remember, this troop is run by you and if you don’t participate, then how can we determine what our goals are and then build a program to meet the goals?

White water rafting
We are making plans to do some White water rafting and camping, June 10-12, in PA.  Members of the Sea Base crews will be given first shot at this trip because it will be preparing the members for the trip.  There are 18 seats that we can fill, thus if there are others that would like to attend, please indicate this when registering.  The rules on the rafts are that all participants have to be at least 12 years old.  I am sorry that this is such short notice but if you are going to participate or are interested in participating, please register, via the webpage, immediately.

The campsite is 3 hours away.  We will need help with transportation to and from the campsite.

Troop goals
Our annual planning meeting is June 18th from 9:00am to when we get done.

We will be talking about and deciding on our troop goals and where we plan out all of our camping trips and other activities for the next year.  We will use the goals that we decide upon to help guide us as we determine what we will be doing for the next year.

We need input from you on both the goals and the activities.  Please plan to participate or if that is not possible, please let your patrol leaders know your thoughts so you are represented at the meeting. activities for the next month
